Subject: Bulk insulations and hot roof spaces

Hi Tim,

I had read one of these articles before, it certainly something I am very conscious of and the reason why I am spending a bit of time and money making sure my renovation results in a low energy use home.

Here is a more detailed version of my experience with bulk insulation if you want to use it as an example case.

“I currently have a small weatherboard home in Pascoe Vale South that I have renovated with energy efficiency in mind. We have installed double glazed windows, R2.5 insulation in the walls and R4.0 polyester insulation in the roof. We moved into the house around June 2009 and found that the house was very comfortable in winter as it maintained its warmth well when the heater was turned off at night and in the day.

When the first few hot days of summer arrived I was surprised and disappointed to find our house would heat up very quick. For example on a day of approximately 42 degrees the house was 37 by 6pm after being around 20 at 8am. After going inside the roof on a mild sunny day I was staggered by how hot it was, so I installed an extraction fan in the roof to keep it cooler. Unfortunately this made only a very small difference and my house is still very uncomfortable on a hot day. So to date I have spent $1610 on ceiling insulation (received $1600 from Gov rebate), about $500 on wall insulation and $450 on an extraction fan and it really hasn’t made any difference in keeping the house cool. In some ways the R4.0 bats have made it worse in summer as it tends to let the heat through in the day and lock it in during the night.

On further reading I now understand that in summer the radiant heat coming through the ceiling is the cause of my problems, so I would like to install the concertina foils batts.

Can you please give me a call to discuss the best way to install the foils batts.”

Kind Regards
