The Healthy Home Project has been recognised as
Queensland's benchmark energy efficient home by the QMBA, as judged by the
Queensland Office of Sustainable Energy, and, as Australia's leading prototype
resource efficient house by the MBA nationally, as judged by Environment
Australia.
Designed by Dr Richard Hyde from Qld University Dept
of Architecture, this two storey house situated in Mermaid Beach on the Gold
Coast has light-weight, low-mass design principles and, through Australian
Resource Commission (ARC) grant funding, is audited for energy and water use,
thermal comfort, life cycle cost analysis, indoor air quality and post
occupancy performance.
The Healthy Home is a naturally ventilated
house, assisted only by ceiling fans, and has no airconditioning or heating
requirements. According to the AGO (Australian Greenhouse Office), it is an excellent
example of achieving "Best Practice" in residential building energy
efficiency. It is also a perfect case study of a residential building which
will comply with the new BCA National Building Energy Efficiency Code, by
conforming to the "deemed to satisfy" option known as
"performance", as opposed to the alternate "prescription"
category option.
AFIA was selected as the insulation consultants to The Healthy Home and aluminium foil
insulation products were specified and used throughout - two foil products in
both the external walls and roofs, namely Concertina FOIL BATTS combined with
standard roll foil. Fibrous / bulk insulations were specifically excluded by UQ
at the design stage of the Project. 50mm building blanket foil was selected by
AFIA for use directly under the metal roof
specifically for condensation control
reasons. During the month of
February 2000, the house officially recorded inside temperatures not less than
6-8 deg C cooler than outside.
